Sincona sale 47, lot 1285

This specimen was lot 1285 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 350 CHF (about US$420 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GERMANY, Anhalt-Dessau, Herzogtum, Johann Georg II. 1660-1693. 2/3 Taler 1674, Dessau. FDC. Prachtvolle Erhaltung mit herrlicher Patina. Kleines Zainende. (Germany, duchy of Anhalt-Dessau, John George II, 1660-93, 2/3 thaler of 1674, Dessau mint. Uncirculated, Beautiful condition with magnificent patina, Minor edge clip.)"

We note numerous varieties for this date: KM 5.1 (large date in legend), KM 5.2 (small date in legend), KM 5.3 (arms within palm branches), KM 5.4 (date at bottom, shown here?). Thalers from seventeenth century Anhalt are very rare (we have located only one for the Wiki) so collectors make do with this denomination, which was equal to a gulden.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 18.78 g.

Catalog reference: Mann 882, Dav-222, KM 5.4.
