Künker sale 406, lot 3533

This specimen was lot 3533 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,099 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Louis XV, 1715-1774. Louis d'or au bandeau 1755, C, Caen. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Min. justiert, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold louis of the hair ribbon of 1755, Caen mint. Extremely rare, minor adjustment marks, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The Caen mint struck this type fairly steadily thru the 1750's and 1760's but most of its issues were small and many dates are listed in Droulers as "reported, not confirmed", including this one.

Recorded mintage: 2,561.

Specification: 8.16 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers, this specimen 8.11 g.
