The Jefferson five cents was introduced in 1938. In 2004-05, the traditional Jefferson nickel was suspended to produce four different circulating commemoratives to honor the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark journey. In 2006, a new obverse was introduced but the old Monticello reverse was retained. This example is a proof struck in San Francisco and is worth a few dollars.
Recorded mintage: 3,344,679 proofs.
Specification: 5 g, copper-nickel, 21.2 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 369.
