Goldberg sale 69, lot 4714
France 1846A 2 francs rev Goldberg 69-4714.jpg

This specimen was lot 4714 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $977.50. The catalog description [2] noted, "France. 2 Francs, 1846-A (Paris). Louis Philippe I. Reflective surfaces and toned. NGC graded MS-64." This type was struck during the reign of Louis Philippe (1830-48) from numerous mints. The specimen shown is from Paris and is the second highest mintage issue. It is one of the few dates at all available in high grade. Many issues of this type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. All two francs issued prior to 1859, including this one, were demonetized in 1869 to make way for the succeeding issue which was only 0.835 fine.

Recorded mintage: 304,608.

Specification: 27 mm diameter, 10 g, 0.900 fine silver, reeded edge. Designed by Joseph François Domard, 1792-1858.

Catalog reference: F.260/113, KM-743.1; Gad-520.
