France 1843W 2 francs rev DSLR.jpg

This type was struck during the reign of Louis Philippe of France (1830-48) from numerous mints. The specimen shown is from Lille and is a high mintage issue, tho no uncirculated specimens are reported. It is priced[1] about 60% higher in VF than the commonest date (1847A). Many issues of this type are known from a handful (<10) of examples. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. All two francs issued prior to 1859, including this one, were demonetized in 1869 to make way for the succeeding issue which was only 0.835 fine.

Specification: 27 mm diameter, 10 grams, 0.900 fine silver. Designed by Joseph François Domard, 1792-1858.

Recorded mintage: 286,478[1], 296,000[2].

Catalog reference: F.260/101, KM 743.13, Gad-520.
