France 1842-B 2 francs
This specimen was lot 1559 in Jean Elsen sale 116 (Brussels, March 2013), where it sold for €230 (about US$349 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"FRANCE, Louis-Philippe Ier (1830-1848), AR 2 francs, 1842 B, Rouen. Petites griffes. Superbe (kingdom of France, Louis Philippe (1830-48), silver franc of 1842, Rouen mint. Tiny scratches, extremely fine.)"
The Rouen mint was a steady producer of this type issued 1831-48 and some dates are fairly common, such as this one. The type is not difficult to find but is expensive in high grade. All two francs issued prior to 1859 were demonetized in 1869 to make way for the succeeding issue which was only 0.835 fine.
Specification: 27 mm diameter, 10 g, 0.900 fine silver, reeded edge. Designed by Joseph François Domard, 1792-1858.
