Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 51217
SB124-51217 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 51217 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 1/4 Real, 1809-L. Lima Mint. Ferdinand VII. NGC EF Details--Environmental Damage. An exciting offering of this 1/4 Real from the first and RAREST date of the type issued under Ferdinand VII. Despite the presence of minor roughness, the coin retains great clarity of detail and satisfying pewter-gray surface tone. A solid representative for anyone assembling a date set. From the EMO Collection." Two types of cuartillas were struck at the beginning of the series: KM 99 (portrait type) struck 1792-96 and KM 102.1 (lions/castles without value) struck 1794-96. Both are scarce compared to the regular lions and castles type struck 1796-1821, of which an example is shown here.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.84 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14978, EMO-496 (Plate coin); KM-108; Cal-260.
