This specimen was lot 51208 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 1/4 Real, 1798-L. Lima Mint. Charles IV. NGC AU-58. Offering a full strike and a high degree of originality overall, this Cuartillo would please any collector in search of this date. From the EMO Collection." Two types of cuartillas were struck at the beginning of the series: KM 99 (portrait type) struck 1792-96 and KM 102.1 (lions/castles without value) struck 1794-96. Both are scarce compared to the regular lions and castles type struck 1796-1821, of which an example is shown here.
