This specimen was lot 32161 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $5,875. The catalog description[1] noted, "Chile, Charles III gold Escudo 1786 So-DA MS63 NGC, Santiago mint. A handsome coin, choice Mint State with sharply defined features and strong mint luster. One of the finest seen of this very scarce issue, and currently the finest certified example of the type by NGC. Ex. Norweb Collection (Spink America 3/1997, lot 98)." The Santiago mint was opened in 1749 to mint locally produced gold and the eight escudos are fairly plentiful. The minor denominations, however, are quite scarce with this one escudo of Charles III being fairly typical. Unusually, mintages are known for the Santiago mint and the mintage noted below is only slightly below average.

Recorded mintage: 2,652.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.901 fine gold, .098 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12356, KM 26, Cal-740.
