This specimen was lot 31011 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $646.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Philip V gold Escudo 1739/8 Mo-MF AU Details (Scratches) NGC, Mexico City mint, Well-detailed and with an incredibly clear overdate, this example presents golden-amber surfaces, a few light grazes, and one obverse scratch that extends from the rim into the hair of Philip V. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins." All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce. This type, the only one showing the bust of Philip V, was struck 1732-47. The years 1732-33 are much scarcer than the rest but none are common.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.917 fine gold, .099 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: Cayón-9593, Fr-11, KM 113, cf. Cal-524 (unlisted overdate).
