The first specimen was lot 31382 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "Awadh. Wajid Ali Shah gold Ashrafi AH 1272 Year 9 (1855) MS62 PCGS, Lucknow mint. Highly textured fields lend a unique and almost matte appearance to this scarce gold offering. At the present this coin remains the only example seen by NGC." The second specimen was lot 927 in Stephen Album sale 45 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2023), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[2] noted, "AWADH: Wajid Ali Shah, 1847-1856, AV ashrafi, Lakhnau, AH1272 year 9, an attractive nearly mint state example, PCGS graded AU58." This type was struck AH 1269, AH 1272 only. Friedberg lists this coin as a mohur, the gold version of the rupee.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: gold, 23-24 mm diameter, 10.7-11.4 g, the second specimen 10.56 g.
Catalog reference: KM 378.3, Fr-1023.
