This specimen was lot 2328 in Goldberg sale 100 (Los Angeles, September 2017), where it sold for $734.37. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Two Pounds, 2004. Elizabeth II. Reverse: First steam locomotive. Choice Brilliant Proof." The catalog listing, specification and mintages reported below are complicated by the multiple formats of issue: copper-nickel (KM 1049), silver (KM 1049a), silver piedfort (KM P45) and gold (KM 1049b). We have noted here the mintages given in the SCWC altho they do not coincide with Seaby[2].
Recorded mintage: 5,004,500 + 35,020 proofs plus 19,233 + 1,923 proofs in silver plus 1,500 proofs in gold.
Specification: KM-1049: 12 g, bimetallic copper-nickel center in nickel-brass ring, 28.4 mm diameter; KM-1049a: 0.925 fine silver; KM-1049b: 15.98 g, .916 fine gold.
Catalog reference: S.4578; KM-1049, 1049a, 1049b, P45 (silver piedfort).
