This specimen was lot 31587 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: James II gold Guinea 1685 AU Details (Reverse Scratched) NGC. Above average grade for this type, the first year of the short-lived reign of James II. This Guinea exhibits attractive subdued gold surfaces, much residual luster particularly in the legends, the whole planchet overlaid with a light reddish tone. The two minor scratches on the reverse are short and fairly light. All in all a handsome specimen, an excellent representative of the type. From the Collection of a Philhellene." This type was struck 1685-86 only. Guineas with the elephant and castle also exist (Fr-296) and bring more.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 8.35 g, 0.917 fine gold.
