This specimen was lot 73628 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "URUGUAY. 5 Centesimos, 1953. London Mint. PCGS PROOF-66 Gold Shield. Surpassed by just one example in the PCGS census, this incredibly alluring minor offers a delightful pastel tone throughout and currently serves as the online 'plate' coin for the PCGS Proof entry for the type. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." Uruguayan coinage was sporadic in the twentieth century and many issues are rare; this one is common. The next issue of this denomination was in 1960, using nickel brass.
Recorded mintage: 17,500,000 plus proofs.
Specification: 3.5 g, copper-nickel, 20 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-34.
