from Stack's Bowers October 2020 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71585
SB1020-71585r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71585 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Weimar Republic. 2 Mark, 1926-J. Hamburg Mint. ANACS PROOF-63. Quite pleasingly toned, this choice proof issue presents a delightful champagne hue atop steely gray surfaces, all with a good deal of shimmering brilliance." This type, issued 1925-27 and 1931, was struck at six mints along with a similar one mark (KM 44). Wilhelmine two mark were 11.11 g, 0.900 fine silver; the succeeding two mark struck by the Nazis was 8 g, 0.625 fine silver. It is somewhat expensive; perhaps they were melted during World War Two.

Recorded mintage: 5,305,000, fairly common for the type.

Specifications: 10 g, 0.500 fine silver, 28 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-45; J-320.
