This is a scarce date of a popular and longlived type, first introduced in 1859, the reverse modified in 1860 and the weight reduced and alloy changed in 1864. It was struck until 1909. Over a billion were made, certainly the first American coin type to achieve that milestone and perhaps the first in the world. This 1908-S is from the first issue of cents made outside of Philadelphia. It is scarce but enough were saved that it is not rare.
Recorded Mintage: 1,115,000.
Specification: 3.11 g, bronze, 19 mm diameter, plain edge.
Catalog reference: KM 90a.
