Bulgaria 1930-BP 100 leva

Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74225

This specimen was lot 74225 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $144. The catalog description^[1] noted, "BULGARIA. 100 Leva, 1930-BP. Budapest Mint. Boris III. PCGS MS-61. This charming Mint State example can boast a strong eye appeal, with good luster, and only limited signs of handling and marking." This type was struck at the Budapest mint along with a similar twenty and fifty leva. In 1930, Bulgaria, shorn of territory by the treaty of Versailles, was riven by struggles between the communists and the military establishment. The king, Boris III, chose the Axis side during World War Two and was deposed by the Communists in 1943 as the Soviet army approached.
