This specimen was lot 21655 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $14,950. The catalog description[1] noted, "Felipe V gold cob 8 Escudos 1736N Lima, AU50 NGC, nicely struck on a virtually round planchet, appealing old-time cabinet patina. The obverse is slightly double-struck causing the 3 in the date to be only partially expressed, but a serendipitous second date is clearly readable in the obverse legend: ANO 736. From the Don Benito Collection of Hispanic Gold." This type is recorded for 1710-47. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.
Recorded mintage: 35,504.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW.
