This specimen was lot 70646 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 3 Pence, 1567. Elizabeth I (1558-1603). PCGS EF-45 Secure Holder. Crown mintmark, very early dated issue. Dark toning, slightly off center, bold portrait." This type is listed for 1567-77. Later issues were not dated, to the annoyance of modern collectors. The first milled coinage made in England appeared at this time, but the process was slow and expensive. Hammered coinage would continue until the 1660's and would not be taken out of circulation until the 1690's.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 24 grains (1.55 g), 0.925 fine silver.
Catalog reference: S-2566; N-1998.
