This specimen was lot 70748 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, May 2018), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Sovereign, 1980. PCGS PROOF-69 DEEP CAMEO Secure Holder. Brilliant with hard mirror fields and frosted cameo devices." This type was struck 1980-84 in substantial numbers (the peak mintage was 2,500,000 in 1982) but as it was sold at its gold value, it is unlikely any ever circulated as coin. Cleaned and damaged specimens are likely ex-jewelry.
