Steve Album sale 51, lot 2221

This specimen was lot 2221 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "ZAND: Karim Khan, 1753-1779, AR 2 abbasi, Rasht, AH1190, with mint epithet Dar al-Marz, a lovely mint state example! PCGS graded MS63." This double abbasi was struck at many mints including Rasht, where it is listed for AH 1180-93. Wikipedia comments, "Mohammad Karim Khan Zand (Persian: محمدکریم خان زند‎) was the founder of the Zand Dynasty, ruling from 1751 to 1779. He ruled all of Iran (Persia) except for Khorasan. He also ruled over some of the Caucasian lands and occupied Basra for some years. Following Karim Khan's death, civil war broke out once more, and none of his descendants were able to rule the country as effectively as he had. The last of these descendants, Lotf Ali Khan, was executed by Qajar ruler Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar, who became the sole ruler of Iran."

Recorded mintage: unknown but a common mint.

Specifications: 9.2 g, silver.

Catalog reference: A-2796, KM-523.7.
