H3067-33906r.jpg

This specimen was lot 33906 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIII gold Ecu d'Or 1615-T MS61 NGC, Nantes mint. A stellar exemplar with lustrous fields and boldly defined central devices. A slight waviness to the flan is noted, yet the overall sharpness of the features and the bright surfaces draw the viewer's full attention when experienced in-hand." This type was struck 1611-44 and was the standard gold coin of France prior to the introduction of the milled louis d'or in 1641.

Recorded mintage: 5,200, a scarce date.

Specification: 3.37 g, 0.958 fine gold, plain edge.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 1c, Dr/2 № 1c, Dupl-1282 A, Fr-398, Gad-55, KM 41.16.
