Sincona sale 6, lot 1109

This specimen was lot 1109 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 1400 CHF (about US$1,723 with buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Louis XIII. 1610-1643. Ecu d´or au soleil 1616, Paris. Gekröntes Wappen. Rv. Blumenkreuz, in der Mitte Mzz. A. Fast vorzüglich. (France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, écu d'or au soleil of 1616, Paris mint. Obverse: crowned arms; reverse: floriate cross, mintmark "A," good extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1611-44 and was the standard gold coin of France prior to the introduction of the milled louis d'or in 1641. Gadoury notes this mint as slightly scarce.

Specification: 3.37 g, .958 fine gold, plain edge; this specimen is 3,37 g.
