Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1164

This specimen was lot 1164 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,060 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIII (1610-1643), AV écu d'or au soleil, 1615B, Rouen. 1er type. D/ Ecu de France couronné, sous un soleil. La légende débutant à 6h. R/ Croix anillée et fleurdelisée, avec B en coeur. presque Superbe. Provient de notre vente 54, 13 juin 1998, 793. (kingdom of France, Louis XIII, 1610-43, gold shield of the sunburst of 1615, Rouen mint, first type. Obverse: crowned arms of France under a sunburst, obverse legend begins at 6 o'clock; reverse: voided floriate cross with mintmark at center. about Extremely Fine.)"

This type was struck 1611-44 and was the standard gold coin of France prior to the introduction of the milled louis d'or in 1641. Gadoury notes this mint as slightly scarce.

Recorded mintage: 119,800.
