Sincona sale 90, lot 1765

This specimen was lot 1765 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 17,000 CHF (about US$22,464 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH, Rosenberg, Herren, Wilhelm, 1581-1592. Dukat 1590, Reichenstein. Ausbeute der Reichensteiner Gruben. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. (Austrian states, lordship of Rosenberg, William, 1581-92, ducat of 1590, Reichestein mint, for the mines. Very rare, Extremely fine.)"

The princely family of the Rosenbergs issued only a few gold coins in the 1590's before the line fell extinct in 1611. The Reichenstein mint is in Silesia. This is the most available ducat from this locale, being struck 1582-88 and 1590-91.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.48 g.

Catalog reference: FuS 2508, Müseler 52/3a, Fr-112.
