Künker sale 294, lot 3402

This specimen was lot 3402 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,146 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Erzherzog Karl, 1564-1590. Dukat 1590, Klagenfurt. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung AU 58. GOLD. Fast vorzüglich. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Charles, 1564-90, ducat of 1590, Klagenfurt mint, in NGC AU-58 holder. About extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1586-90 with posthumous issues known for 1591 and 1597. Earlier dates had different arms on the reverse. It is one of the more common Hapsburg ducats of the period. Never emperor himself, his son Ferdinand became emperor in 1619.
