from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70523
SB621-70523r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70523 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "CEYLON. 10 Cents, 1909. London Mint. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. A mostly steely gray minor, this nearly-choice example exhibits some burnished amber and hints of olive green." This type was struck 1902-03, 1907-10. The 1909 is a common date. While the 25 cents matched the quarter rupee of India, the ten cents corresponded to no Indian coin. Ceylon, famous for tea, attained its independence in 1948 after the British left India and is now known as Sri Lanka.

Recorded mintage: 1,000,000.

Specification: 1.17 g, 0.800 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-97.
