Sincona sale 95, lot 4455

This specimen was lot 4455 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 2,800 CHF (about US$3,881 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Solothurn, Stadt und Kanton, Dicken 1633, Solothurn. Brustbild des hl. Ursus mit Nimbus nach rechts. Rv. (Switzerland, canton of Solothurn, dicken of 1633, Solothurn mint. Obverse: Nimbate St. Ursus right; reverse: nimbate double headed eagle, date in exergue. Of high rarity, Very Fine, Weakly struck. Mintmaster Joseph Roggenstil had the 1632 coins struck with a portrait of St. Ursus in armor (KM 21), which the council evidently did not like. The council therefore ordered that the new coins from now on be struck with a 'bust of St. Ursus' and the reverse with an eagle with a coat of arms on its chest (council manual 1633, 41). This apparently resulted in these new coins, of which at least three pairs of dies are known. Nevertheless, these coins are very rare.)"

Numista states this coin was one-third thaler; which was true while the thaler passed for 72 kreuzer. This type was struck 1633 only.

Record mintage: unknown.

Specification: 8.4 g, silver, 31 mm diameter, this specimen 8.33 g.
