Solothurn 1632 dicken
This specimen was lot 4443 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 16,000 CHF (about US$23,208 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Solothurn, Stadt und Kanton, Dicken 1632, Solothurn. Doppeladler mit Nimben und Kreuz, unten im Abschnitt die Jahreszahl zwischen zwei Punkten. · MONETA . SO LODORENS ·. Rv. Hüftbild des hl. Ursus mit Nimbus im Harnisch nach rechts. In der Rechten Stab mit Kreuzfahne, die Linke am Schwertknauf. Unten das damaszierte Standeswappen, in den Schriftkreis reichend. . SANCTVS . VR SVS . MART . Von grösster Seltenheit. Sehr schön. Kleiner Randschlag. Exemplar der Slg. Kunzmann, Auktion SINCONA 53, Zürich, Oktober 2018, Los 6697 (ebenfalls das Titelbild des Auktionskatalogs). Below, the damascened coat of arms interrupting the inscription. Of the highest rarity, Very Fine, Minor edge bump.)
Dieser Dicken ist früheren Dicken von Zug aber auch Dicken von Stadt und Bistum Chur angeglichen, ja kann auch als Beischlag angesehen werden. Vielleicht wollte man die Akzeptanz im Umlauf erhöhen. Ob dieser Umstand dazu führte, dass der Solothurner Rat anlässlich einer Sitzung 1633 Münzmeister Joseph Roggenstil anwies, die folgenden Dicken so zu ändern, dass neben dem St. Ursenbrustbild die Adlerseite mit einem Wappen auf der Brust erscheinen solle, ist nicht bekannt. Die Dicken von 1633 haben in der Tat ein ganz anderes Aussehen. (This coin is similar to earlier coins from Zug, as well as those from the city and diocese of Chur, and can even be considered an additional mark. Perhaps the intention was to increase acceptance in circulation. Whether this circumstance led the Solothurn Council, at a meeting in 1633, to instruct mint master Joseph Roggenstil to modify subsequent coins so that, in addition to the bust of St. Ursus, the eagle side would appear with a coat of arms on the breast is unknown. The coins from 1633 do indeed look quite different.)"
The SCWC notes a variety (KM 20) with St. Ursus wearing a helmet. The dicken was 24 kreuzer.
