This specimen was lot 1017 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €48,000 (about US$53,194 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. 6 Daler Klippe, 1604. Christian IV. NGC AU-55. Minted by Nicolaus Schwabe in only 143 examples. Unusually nicely struck and EXCESSIVELY RARE. At the time the value of 6 Daler corresponded to 3.5 Ducats (Hungarian Guldens). A few contact marks do not detract from the rarity nor the beauty of this fascinating Klippe." This was one of a series of gold klippes struck in eight dalers (Fr-44), six dalers (Fr-45), four dalers (Fr-46) and three dalers (Fr-47). The experiment was not repeated and all are very rare. Christian IV (r. 1588-1648) had a long but not particularly successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.
Recorded mintage: 143.
Specification: 12.95 g, 0.923 fine gold, this specimen 13.07 g.
