Stack's Bowers 2014 ANA sale, lot 30640
Sta ANA 30640r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30640 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $552.25. The catalog description[2] noted, "GUATEMALA. 2 Reales, 1794-NGM. NGC MS-63. Toned. From the Demarete Collection." Shown is a 1794 two reales from the Nueva Guatemala mint, of a type struck 1790-1807. In 1776, an earthquake demolished Antigua Guatemala (including the mint) and a new city was built some miles away. To mark the move, the mintmark was changed to "NG" ("Nueva Guatemala", still the capital of Guatemala) on all issues of 1777 and after. Assayer "M" is noted for the years 1785-1836. Harris[1] notes that this Charles IV denomination is common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13560, KM-51; Cal-type-107#917.
