from Steve Album sale 39, lot 3859
SA39-3859r.jpg

This specimen was lot 3859 in Stephen Album sale 39 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $72. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU: Luis I, 1724, AR real (1)725-L, assayer M (not readable), crude cob issue, one-year type, Good, R." Cob one reales were struck at the Lima mint 1701-46 for Philip V of Spain and became the "bits" of pirate lore. Specimens with legible dates bring triple those without. This type was struck 1725 only. Louis' unexpected death forced his father, Philip V, to resume the throne. The fineness was lowered from 0.931 to 0.917 in 1728.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.938 fine silver, this specimen 2.31 g.

Catalog reference: KM-B39, Cayón-unlisted.
