This specimen was lot 908 in Jean Elsen sale 133 (Brussels, June 2017), where it sold for €150 (about US$198 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, <blockquote>"''VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Keizer Karel (1506-1555), Cu korte, 1549, Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond hoofd r. Kz/ Klimmende leeuw l. Zeer Fraai à Prachtig.'' (county of Flanders, emperor Charles V, 1506-55, copper korte of 1549, Bruges mint. Obverse: crowned head; reverse: lion rampant to left. Very fine to extremely fine.)"</blockquote> We aren't sure what the face value of this coin was but as its weight matches that of this [[Artois 1591 maille|maille]] from Artois, we'll presume it was one-third of a liard.

Jean Elsen sale 133, lot 908

This specimen was lot 908 in Jean Elsen sale 133 (Brussels, June 2017), where it sold for €150 (about US$198 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Keizer Karel (1506-1555), Cu korte, 1549, Brugge. Vz/ Gekroond hoofd r. Kz/ Klimmende leeuw l. Zeer Fraai à Prachtig. (county of Flanders, emperor Charles V, 1506-55, copper korte of 1549, Bruges mint. Obverse: crowned head; reverse: lion rampant to left. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

Numista notes this type for 1543-55 and undated and states the total mintage was 5,964,297. A similar coin was struck in Antwerp, where it was called a double mite instead of a korte. We aren't sure what the face value of this coin was but as its weight matches that of this maille from Artois, we'll presume it was one-third of a liard.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.91 g, copper, 19 mm diameter, this specimen 1,76 g.

Catalog reference: G.H. 198-5b.
