The first specimen was lot 3106 in Goldberg sale 87 (Los Angeles, September 2015), where it sold for $164.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain. Silver Penny, 1701. William III. Nearly mint state with a light tone over prooflike surfaces. NGC graded AU-58." The second specimen was lot 2717 in Goldberg sale 91 (Los Angeles, June 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted, "Great Britain. Maundy Penny, 1701 NGC Unc. William III. Obverse, laureate bust of King right. Reverse crowned numeral. A scarce date and practically mint state. NGC graded Uncirculated, Details (Reverse Scratched)." British pennies were struck in silver until the introduction of the Boulton and Watt copper penny in 1797. Increasingly useless, the silver penny was a holdover from medieval times. This type is rather scarce in nice condition.
