Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 1254

This specimen was lot 1254 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $9,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Laurel (20 Shillings), ND (1624). London Mint; mm: trefoil. James I. PCGS AU-55. Obverse: Laureate, draped, and armored bust left; XX (mark of value) to right; Reverse: Coat-of-arms over long cross fourchee; crown above. This exceptional Laurel has beautiful gold luster that shimmers and sheens. Very well struck, far beyond the common hammered strike, with exquisite detail in the portraiture and strong and bold legends. A fine piece for the discerning collector. From the Paul C. Runze Collection." James I, who united England and Scotland, invented the term Great Britain. The laurel coinage of the second half of his reign comes in one, half (Fr-243) and quarter laurel (Fr-244), all expensive.
