from the Stacks Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 20585
Mainz SB818-20585r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20585 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Mainz. Ducat, 1795-IL IA. Friedrich Karl Josef (1774-1802). NGC MS-63. The archbishop of Mainz was a prolific issuer of gold in the Middle Ages but production had dwindled by the eighteenth century. This is one of three different ducats issued in 1795; the following year, Mainz was occupied by French revolutionary armies and her coinage ceased. This example is choice, with only a few minor instances of handling. Our first offering of this type since Ponterio sale 151 (Baltimore, November 2009, lot 8462)." Three different ducats were issued by the archbishop in 1795. Soldiers of revolutionary France occupied Mainz in October 1792, causing the archbishop to flee. Coalition forces besieged and captured the city in July 1793 after a heavy bombardment. This and other issues of 1794-95 were likely struck to celebrate the departure of the French and to reward those involved in the relief of the city. The city was annexed to France in 1797. After the fall of Napoleon, the city became part of Hesse while the Main valley territories were divided between Nassau and Bavaria.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-1682; KM-410.
