Goldberg sale 106, lot 1702
China G106-1702r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1702 in Goldberg sale 106 (Los Angeles, September 2018), where it sold for $96. The catalog description[1] noted, "China. 20 Yuan, 2005. Panda cub and mom seated in bamboo. NGC graded MS-69." The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. The gold panda is one of the most popular. Prior to 2001, the 1/20 ounce panda was denominated 5 yuan. The Chinese government issued twelve different panda coins in 2005, as follows:

  • KM A1580: 10,000 yuan, 1 kilogram gold;
  • KM 1581: 2,000 yuan, 5 oz gold;
  • KM 1582: 500 yuan, 1 oz gold;
  • KM 1583: 200 yuan, ½ oz gold;
  • KM 1584: 100 yuan, ¼ oz gold;
  • KM 1585: 50 yuan, 1/10 oz gold;
  • KM 1586: 20 yuan, 1/20 oz gold (shown here);
  • KM 1587: 300 yuan, 1 kilogram silver;
  • KM 1588: 50 yuan, 5 oz silver;
  • KM 1589: 10 yuan, 1 oz silver;
  • KM 1590: 100 yuan, ½ oz palladium;
  • KM 1591: 100 yuan, 1/10 oz platinum.

Recorded mintage: 36,410.

Specification: 1.56 g, 0.999 fine gold, .050 troy oz AGW, 27 mm diameter.
