from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71318
SB621-71318r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71318 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, 1750/46. London Mint. George II. PCGS AU-55 Gold Shield. Overdate variety. Very lightly handled and entirely wholesome, this near-Mint minor offers a deep cabinet tone and a clear representation of the overdate." This type was struck 1746, 1750-51, 1758. The mint did not produce near enough small change for the industrial boom of the eighteenth century, leading to a proliferation of private tokens. The situation would not be rectified until the reform of 1817.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.02 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: S-3704; KM-583.3.
