Jean Elsen sale 146, lot 1458

This specimen was lot 1458 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it sold for €220 (about US$321 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Napoléon Ier (1804-1814), 1 franc, 1808T, Nantes. Petits coups sur la tranche. Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe. (empire of France, Napoleon I, 1804-14, one franc of 1808, Nantes mint. Minor rim nicks, nice toning, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This was struck at Nantes under the régime of Napoleon as emperor. The type was struck 1807-08. However, despite being in production for little over a year, more were made (11.8 million) than of the subsequent type (F.205) minted 1809-14 (10.0 million). It was demonetized in 1869. The catalog[2] notes 16 dates for the type, some very rare. This date is scarce.

Recorded mintage: 105,529[2].

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.

Catalog reference: F.204/14, KM-692.12; Gad-446.
