from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72127

This specimen was lot 72127 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $144. The catalog description^[1] noted, "LATVIA. 5 Santimi, 1922. Huguenin Freres (Switzerland) Mint. NGC MS-64 Brown. Though designated as brown, this near-Gem features some dazzling hints of red around the devices along with a fairly deep cobalt blue among the remainder of the surfaces." The Republic of Latvia was established in 1918 after the fall of czarist Russia. However, its independence was short lived, as it was occupied by Soviet troops in 1940 during World War II and the end of the war brought only incorporation into the Soviet Union. It regained its independence again in 1991. This type was also struck in 1923 but only two pieces are known to exist.
