Salzburg 1672 1/4 ducat

This gold quarter ducat was minted in Salzburg in 1672. The specimen was lot 20244 in Heritage sale 3009 (Chicago, April 2010), where it sold for $474.95. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Salzburg. Maximilian Gandolph gold 1/4 Ducat 1672, MS63 NGC, a choice little coin with well-struck features and full mint luster." This type is noted for 1668-1686 and does not have a high catalog value. The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers.
