Germany 1933-J 5 mark

Heritage sale 3064, lot 30936

This specimen was lot 30936 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $5,640. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Weimar Republic Oak Tree 5 Mark 1933-J MS65 NGC, Hamburg mint. The final year for the type and a highly coveted key date, this absolute Gem possesses pale yellow tone atop superbly preserved surfaces. Presently the single finest example of the date certified by NGC." This type, issued 1927-33, was struck in large numbers in Berlin ("A"), Munich ("D"), Muldenhutten ("E"), Stuttgart ("F"), Karlsruhe ("G") and Hamburg ("J", shown here). It is, however, expensive; perhaps they were melted during World War Two. We have included it in our category of thalers based on its size, even tho it is only 0.500 fine.

Recorded mintage: 423,000 plus proofs.
