Stack's Bowers 2014 ANA sale, lot 30432

This specimen was lot 30432 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $705. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 40 Franc, 1808-W. PCGS AU-50 Secure Holder." While the 1808-A and 1808-H are fairly common, the 1808-M, 1808-U and 1808-W (Lille mint) are all rare. The type was struck 1807-08 only.

Recorded mintage: 6,326.

Specification: 12.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier and Jean-Pierre Droz.
