Mexico 2006 100 pesos KM-795

This specimen is one of a series issued by the Mexico City mint to honor each of the Mexican states, this one being for Jalisco. The program was modeled on the U. S. Mint's state quarter program and was quite popular. The first series, featuring the arms of each state, was issued in reverse alphabetical order, starting with Zacatecas. The second series, commencing in 2005, featured state animals, monuments, heroes, etc. The one for Jalisco, shown here, honors a famous orphanage in the state capital. The coins are the same weight and diameter as the bimetallic fifty pesos of 1993-95 (KM 571). Wikipedia comments, "The Hospicio Cabañas or Cabañas Museum in Guadalajara, Jalisco was one of the oldest and largest orphanage and hospital complexes in the Americas. Now turned into a museum, the main hall hosts the magnum opus frescoes of muralist painter José Clemente Orozco. The place was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997."
