This specimen was lot 2117 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Salzburg, Erzbistum Johann Ernst von Thun und Hohenstein, 1687-1709. Taler 1690. Wappen unter Kardinalshut, darüber Madonna mit Kind. Rv. Der stehende hl. Rudbertus mit Attributen, darunter Wappen. Gutes sehr schön. (Archbishopric of Salzburg, John Ernest of Thun and Hohenstein, 1687-1709, thaler of 1690. Obverse: archbishop's arms, cardinal's hat and Madonna and Child above; reverse: St. Rupert with orb and staff, arms below; good very fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg, an ecclesiatical state between Austria and Bavaria, was blessed with abundant silver mines. This type was issued in large numbers 1687-1709 and is common today.
