This specimen was lot 20163 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Klippe Ducat, 1529. Vienna Mint. Ferdinand I (1521-1564). PCGS Genuine--Scratch, AU Details Secure Holder. Siege issue. Mintmaster Thomas Beheim arranged this emergency klippe coinage during the first Turkish siege of Vienna by the forces of Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, which lasted from September 27 to October 15, 1529. Well struck with great detail on the obverse bust and reverse coat of arms. Numerous scratches throughout the surfaces account for the 'details' grade, but their influence on the eye appeal is fairly limited. From the John Whitney Walter Collection. Ex: Bowers and Merena auction, August 9-12, 1989, Lot #2036." Friedberg notes that the siege issues of 1529 include Fr-18 (4 ducats), -19 (3 ducats), -20 (2 ducats), -21 (1½ ducats), -22 (shown here) and -23 (½ ducat), all scarce to rare.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.54 g.
Catalog reference: Fr-22.
