This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, in 1761. This specimen was lot 3475 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $2,530. The catalog description[1] noted, "1761 JM 8 escudos. Lima mint. VF-30 (NGC). Small armored bust of Carlos III to right, legends around, date below / crowned arms, legends around. Pale yellow gold with attractive peripheral toning. Marks consistent with the amount of wear, some softness of strike on right side of shield, a few trival marks at reverse rim. The first appearance of this bust of Carlos III in Lima, an issue Calico rates as very rare. A two year type. From B. Max Mehl’s sale of the Thomas W. Voetter Collection, January 1943, Lot 292."

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW; this specimen: 26.84 grams, 36.40 mm diameter.
