Heritage sale 3094, lot 35018
H3094-35018r.jpg

This specimen was lot 35018 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "Peru: Charles III 4 Reales 1769 LM-JM AU58 NGC, Lima mint. An elusive and conditionally challenging 4 Reales issue out of Lima that rarely comes to market finer than VF, generally seen with some sort of conditional qualifier. This wonderful offering, certified just shy of Mint State designations, exhibits flashes of mint bloom witnessed to the protected areas of the legends, highlighting gentle iridescent toning set atop largely pewter fields. According to NGC and PCGS census data, this examples ranks as the third finest Lima-minted 4 Reales struck prior to 1820, no small feat when considering the total production from this Peruvian mint. From the Long Island Collection." This specimen is one of a series struck 1760-72 during the reign of Charles III (1759-88).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.917 fine silver, .399 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-11729, KM 63, Cal-827.
