This specimen was lot 11184 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,680. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1775-JJ 8 Escudos. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-53 (PCGS). Bright yellow gold with flashy luster and a bold strike. A very handsome example with no significant issues. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. From Stack's, December 1969." This "standard bust" eight escudos, struck 1772-84, superseded the "rat nose" bust used at Bogotá 1762-71. The Popayán mint also adopted the new bust, dropping the old bust of the prior king, Ferdinand VI, used until 1771. The type marked a debasement from .917 fine to .901 fine gold.
