Colonial quarter reales of the "Lions and castles" type are known from the Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán mints for 1796-1819 (KM 63 or KM 67). These undated specimens were struck before dates were applied. The first specimen was lot 51010 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $1,620. The catalog description^[1] noted,

"COLOMBIA. 1/4 Real, ND (ca. 1756-96). Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogota) Mint. Time of Charles III to Charles IV. NGC MS-61. Variety with lion's tail curled inward. A terrific exemplar of this elegant anepigraphic issue. The distinctive wide castle of Colombia appears boldly on the obverse opposite a sharply-defined lion. Free of any problems, the coin retains subtle luster beneath its soft iridescent tone. From the EMO Collection."

The second specimen was lot 51014 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description^[1] noted,

"COLOMBIA. 1/4 Real, ND (ca. 1756-96). Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogota) Mint. Time of Charles III to Charles IV. NGC EF Details--Cleaned. Variety with lion's tail outward. A RARE variety of this issue, the coin features great metal quality and handsome touches of amber tone. From the EMO Collection."

The third specimen was lot 51016 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $120. The catalog description^[1] noted,

"COLOMBIA. 1/4 Real, ND (ca. 1759-96). Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogota) Mint. Time of Charles III to Charles IV. NGC AU Details--Reverse Scratched. Variety with lion's tail curled outward and narrow castle. A short scratch on the reverse field is this coin's only notable defect; it otherwise stands as a lovely and perfectly centered example of this anepigraphic Cuartillo issue. From the EMO Collection."
